How does liposuction work?

Liposuction is a type of procedure that removes excess fat from specific areas of the body. During the procedure, the doctor will use a device called a cannula to create small incisions in the skin. The cannula is connected to a fluid path, suction tubing and a vacuum. These suction tubes are inserted through the incisions and into the fatty areas. The suction is then turned on to remove the fat from the body. After the procedure, the body will naturally remove the fat from the blood and excrete it through urination.

Which areas can be treated with liposuction?

The most common areas for liposuction include the abdomen, back, flanks (love handles), thighs and buttocks. There are also some “off-label” areas that can be treated with liposuction, including knees, calves and the neck.

Ultrasonic liposuction

This technique uses sound waves to break down fat cells. It is typically used for the abdomen, flanks, calves and knees. It is also used as a combination technique with other types of liposuction such as laser liposuction. Ultrasonic liposuction is often performed as an outpatient procedure.

Cool-Touch Liposuction

This is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a special cooling device to freeze the fat cells before they are removed with liposuction. This procedure is typically used on the abdomen and flanks. This method is the most painful procedure, and many patients require anesthetic.

Laser Liposuction

This method uses a laser to heat the fat cells and destroy them. It is typically used for the abdomen, flanks, back, arms and thighs. This method may be combined with other techniques such as ultrasonic liposuction. The laser liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure.

Tumescent Liposuction

A tumescent technique is sometimes used for liposuction. The doctor creates small incisions in the skin and then injects a fluid, such as lidocaine, epinephrine and sodium tromethamine, into the subcutaneous fat tissue to help reduce swelling and sensitivity. The fluid is absorbed slowly over a period of time, and it reduces swelling and discomfort so that patients can return to their daily activities much sooner. Tumescent liposuction is most often used to treat stubborn fat in the abdomen, love handles and thighs.
